Abstract
Economists have long understood the importance of engineering research and development to economic growth. Business leaders, policy makers, and the media often do not. The recent debate over "outsourcing* is just the latest example. This paper examines the relationship between R&D and economic growth and explain how this relationship is often misrepresented by various sources.
