ICT-based peer assisted learning environment: Using online feedback tools for Chinese Language writing tasks

A set of online feedback tools has been developed in the learning portal that supports an ICT-based Chinese Language teaching and learning programme implemented in some Singapore schools. The tools are an integral part of an ICT-based peer assisted learning environment that contributes to pupils´ self-directed learning and formative assessment processes. This paper discusses the design principles, affordances and functionalities of the feedback tools. In particular, there is a tool that allows pupils to provide suggested edits to their peers´ online written work. The decision to accept or reject the suggestions lies with the young authors themselves, thereby cultivating them to be responsible and reflective learners who constantly seek to improve the quality of work. Other avenues of feedback in the environment include facilities that allow pupils to post their comments and rate the written work of their peers.
