  • Abstract
    Mechanisms responsible for hydrodynamic flow and emission instabilities observed during electrohydrodynamic (EH) atomization of aqueous solutions in vacuum are discussed. The treatment covers instabilities associated with evaporation losses from liquid flowing in a capillary tube, formation and growth of bubbles, and solution chemistry. On the basis of experimental results, EH source designs with improved performance and stability have evolved. Several recommendations are made for stable EH atomization of high-vapor-pressure, volatile solutions in vacuum.<>
