Abstract :
Several interesting guiding structures, which utilize dielectric strips, have been proposed during the past few years for use in optical and millimeter wave integrated circuits. The sides of these strips create TE-TM coupling which has so far been neglected in published analyses. Under suitable conditions, this coupling produces new physical effects: leakage and resonance. A simple qualitative explanation of the origin of these effects is presented, together with numerical results obtained from detailed analyses, which illustrate for several structures how these effects are manifested and under what conditions they occur.
