Abstract
The definition of the MFD of photonic crystal fibers that have air holes arranged symmetrically around a core is investigated theoretically from the practical viewpoint of splice loss estimation. We propose defining the MFD as the average of the minimum and maximum MFDs with the help of the Petermann definition.
