Abstract
Raman technology appears to be shaping the future of WDM transmission systems by offering a simple and cost-efficient way to increase their reach and capacity. Through distributed Raman amplification, larger distances and larger throughputs can be achieved on virtually all fiber types. Through lumped Raman amplification, new spectral windows are enabled for WDM transmission, and ultra-wide-band amplifiers (~100 nm) can be achieved
