Abstract :
The transition toward a more sustainable transportation system in the Netherlands takes place in the context of the Dutch ¿Transition management policy framework¿. Transition paths related to mobility within this framework are: (1) hybridization of vehicles, (2) biofuels and natural gas as transportation fuels, (3) hydrogen as a transportation fuel and (4) `intelligent transportation systems´. Early 2008, the authors conducted an assessment of the technology-specific innovation systems of all the transition paths mentioned above. The main outcome of this analysis was the identification of barriers that are currently blocking these paths toward sustainable mobility. The aim of this paper is to further analyze these barriers and provide a classification of the barriers. Such insights are useful for policymakers aiming to further advance the transition toward a more sustainable transportation system.
