Abstract
This paper discusses Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) based promising applications and their prospective use in military and defense industry. XMPP, being an Extensible Markup Language (XML) based protocol, is a widely preferred and open-standard Instant Messaging (IM) protocol. Although many XMPP based systems are readily available in non-military markets it is believed that subject protocol is still trying to find its place in defense industry. Basic functionalities of existing XMPP based systems are IM, chat, message broadcasting, etc. This paper introduces additional functionalities to be implemented in the existing XMPP based messaging systems to make them suitable for military use. Therefore the research in this paper is based on empirical approach and includes qualitative results. Some of the proposed functionalities to be implemented are, Customizable Forms (CF), archiving and database functionalities.
