Abstract
The paper reviews the basic techniques of electronic scanning in phased arrays and identifies current implementations of those techniques. The applications most suited to phased arrays are discussed for both radar and satellite communications. The role of microwave semiconductor devices in future active arrays and the importance of monolithic technology is emphasised. Other future prospects including the use of high speed logic and fibre optics are mentioned.
