  • Abstract
Incorporating line switching as a part of security enhancement could more effectively alleviate overloads of branch equipment in system operations. In market operations, co-optimizing transmission topology and generation dispatch could be a viable way to improve economic efficiency. This paper discusses the integration of line switching in energy and market management systems (EMS/MMS) for control centers. Both a heuristic approach and an optimization-based approach are applied to a vertically integrated utility and a regional transmission organization, respectively. Both approaches lean on some heuristic rules and/or analytical techniques to reduce the candidate set of line switching for all practical purposes. Enhancement of the mathematical model for optimal transmission switching within the context of a security-constrained economic dispatch algorithm is discussed. Numerical results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed methods to combine heuristics with optimization.
