Abstract :
The author considers how closely the theoretical limiting cellular capacity, given as a function of CIR (carrier-to-interference ratio) by himself (1992), may be achieved by commonly used modulation and coding schemes. The variation in channels/cell with CIR in the face of varying modulation level and block coding length is considered. It is seen that the advantage of quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) over 8PSK is reduced in the presence of coding. It is seen that the ratio of actual capacity to the limiting value is constant over a range of CIR values
