Abstract
During the last twenty years, highly transparent vacuum chambers adapted to the requirements of the detectors have been installed in the experimental regions of the CERN colliders: ISR, SPS and LEP. The general method of design of the chambers is described: criteria for the choice of materials, methods of determining the mechanical parameters, manufacturing methods, environmental constraints, etc. . . . An overview of possible future concepts is also presented, in particular the use of new materials
