Abstract :
Summary form only given. We discuss the interplay between spatial symmetry breaking and a polarization instability that creates an unprecedented variety of patterns in an optical system with continuous rotational symmetry. We investigate a system consisting of a short Na vapor cell irradiated by a laser beam slightly detuned from the D/sub 1/ line and a single plane mirror that reflects the transmitted laser beam back into the medium.
