Abstract :
Developments in computer aided analysis tools have made it possible to produce efficient power system simulations that allow the integration of the protection relay algorithms into the simulation studies. However, the conventional procedures of preparing case studies, in which the simulated protection relays have to be located and reconfigured for the different case studies in addition to the analysis of the simulation results, are time consuming. The use of the proposed embedded integration of an expert system with an object-oriented generic multifunction protection relay (GMPR) provides a more effective means for the analysis and evaluation of protective relay functions. A sample power system, incorporating a STATCOM, and subjected to different contingencies, illustrates the effectiveness of this approach.
