A strain of phenol-degraded bacterium was isolated from polluted river bank nearby a steel plant. The isolate was identified as Pseudomonas sp. by 16S rDNA sequence and biochemical characteristics analysis. Experiments showed, Under the conditions of incubation amount of 1%, The initial pH of culture medium in the range of 5.5~7.5 and culture temperature 30~35°C, This Phenol-degraded bacterium was able to degrade phenol in concentrations up to 0.8 g/L after a lag phase. Higher phenol concentrations (1.0 g/L) the Phenol-degraded activity was inhibited.
