Abstract
The spaceborne altimeter described in this paper will provide accurate altitude measurements of the sea surface and will determine with other instruments the general circulation of the oceans. This Ku band radar altimeter is under study at CNES (Centre National d´etudes Spatiales) for the Poseidon oceanography project. A detailed description of the microwave unit and performances of critical equipment are given. The main features of this all solid state pulse compression radar are : - pulse length : 100 ¿s - Bandwidth : 330 MHz - compressed pulse length : 3.03 ns - transmitted peak power level : 2 watts
