Abstract :
This paper proposes a sensorless pulse-width modulation (PWM) pulse skipping method for detecting discontinuous or continuous conduction mode in multi-mode synchronous converters. The gate signal of the synchronous rectifier switch is skipped periodically and the output voltage is observed to determine the conduction mode.. The proposed method can determine the optimal conduction mode, which results in improved efficiency over a wide load range. This method is particularly well suited for digital controller implementation and requires only an output voltage sensor. A synchronous buck converter with 20 V/5 A output is built and tested to verify the proposed algorithm´s performance.
