Abstract
In this paper, we study the throughput characteristics of carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) local area networks (LANs) interconnecting with switching hubs. The interconnection schemes considered here not only increase the performance of CSMA/CD LANs to meet the evolving bandwidth requirements of today´s applications, but also reduce the overhead costs when updating existing CSMA/CD LANs. Two types of interconnection structure are considered. One is a single CSMA/CD cluster which utilizes a switching hub to link several short distance CSMA/CD LANs together. The other is a ring of the CSMA/CD clusters mentioned above which are distributed over a wide area and connected by switching hubs. We also analyze the structure of a ring of crossbars
