Abstract :
The performance of relay selection in the presence of a direct source-destination link has been an open problem, essentially because a direct link introduces cross-dependencies in the relay selection that significantly complicate its analysis. Thus, the previous studies of relay selection by and large have been forced to assume that the network geometry is such that the direct link is weak enough to be ignored. This paper addresses and solves this open problem. Several relaying protocols are analyzed with relay selection in the high-SNR regime using the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff, including AF, DF, NAF, DDF, and CF. In several cases, simplified selection criteria are developed.
