Abstract :
The Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU) [1] is a toroidal machine for the magnetic confinement of nuclear plasmas included in the European Program of Controlled Nuclear Fusion, coordinated by EURATOM. It is mainly conceived to investigate the heating of high density, long confinement time, deuterium plasmas, by means of strong radiofrequency fields, up to temperatures of interest for nuclear fusion. The working frequency is 8 GHz, pertaining to the Lower Hybrid, Electron Mode, Resonant Heating (LHRH) frequency range. Newly conceived high power gyrotron oscillators, will be used as RF power generators. Overmoded, low attenuation, waveguides will feed, through a high level power distribution system, the coupling structures. The paper describes the preliminary design of the 8 GHz, 8 MW, 1S, heating system for FTU.
