Abstract
Emergency communications today attract enlarged interest, both in academia and industry, and are becoming a strategic issue in many developed communications concepts. This paper gives a comprehensive overview on the technical aspects and existing standards in the field and presents several ad-hoc and infrastructure based system solutions. In addition, the interoperability in emergency scenarios, through the capabilities of the new IEEE 802.21 standard, is elaborated.
