Abstract :
In this paper, the proposed orthogonal polynomial based difference operator in detecting edges in 2D monochrome images is presented. The widely known enhancement/thresholding type Roberts, Prewitt and Sobel edge detectors are represented as a linear combination of the proposed difference operator. A very simple enhancement/thresholding edge detection method is devised using the proposed operator. The performance of the proposed polynomial operator as enhancement/thresholding type edge detectors has been evaluated analytically and the result is compared with the widely used edge detectors. The proposed edge detectors exhibit better performance compared to Robert, Prewitt, and Sobel edge detectors.
