Abstract
Summary form only given. In order to successfully deploy a Collaboratory using upcoming Internet standards, new requirements are placed on interconnecting networks. The current best effort Internet is unsuitable for time critical and real time applications. This contribution shows an overview of several user cases. Related IETF work currently in progress is summarized. Special emphasis is given to the evolution of Quality of Service protocols such as Resource ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP) and Differentiated Services (DiffServ). Policy control is an essential component in the successful deployment of QoS. Pilot experiments with national research network agencies proved that QoS networks can not be implemented without an efficient and automated control mechanism. When implementing policy control, it is important to understand the relationships with authentication, authorization and accounting. A model which positions these components is presented. As application resources in future collaboratory environments will benefit from policy controlled network resources, it is important to understand above issues
