Abstract
The historical as well as current national shifts toward an entrepreneurial based economy, and the impact of recent defense industry reductions on the technical communications necessities of Southern California are outlined. As technical professionals face the downsizing of industries which have traditionally been employers of these professionals, many are endeavoring to become technical entrepreneurs or "technipreneurs". This shift in the professional objectives of technologiests combined with the lack of a communications infrastructure, which adequately facilitates the reconstruction their technical characteristics, presents several unique communication challenges. The communications issues of this transition are examined, and a particular solution for communication infrastructures, which can be provided by IEEE and similar professional societies, is introduced
