Abstract :
Novel electrical and optical properties of liquid conducting polymers and oligomers in the liquid state, in the premelting region, and in the solution are studied. Poly(3-alkylthiophene) (PAT), poly(3-alkylselenophene) (PASe), poly(3-alkylfuran) (PAF), poly(9-alkylfluorene) (PAFI), poly(9,9-dialkyfluorene) (PDAFI), and poly(2,5-dialkoxyphenylene vinylene) (RO-PPV) were studied. Novel anomalies in electrical conductivity, photoconduction, and luminescence have been observed, and are discussed in terms of fluctuation of the electronic band scheme and the interchain interaction depending on the alkyl side chain length and on its conformation, and thus on temperature. These conducting polymers and oligomers are also soluble in common solvents and exhibit novel electrical and optical properties such as solvatochromism and scavenging effects
