Abstract :
This paper evaluates techniques for packet detection and coarse synchronization, under various channel conditions. Particular emphasis is given on the impact of data word length, and minimal complexity solutions are derived. A strategy for selecting appropriate factors that guarantee acceptable performance under particularly harsh transmission conditions is also proposed. The derived system achieves detection with a single-bit operation, however it is found that five bits of accuracy are required for synchronization.
