Abstract
Ultimate performance of electromagnetic absorbers were adapted and extrapolated to the field of acoustics. The case of broadband matching structures for ultrasonic transducers is studied in this paper. Simple expressions of appropriate figures of merit were defined to evaluate the efficiency of multilayer matching structures between the piezoelectric material (PZT) and the propagation medium (water). The surface mass of quarter-wavelength matching layers was a key parameter. Results showed that future improvements can be obtained by retaining bandwidth (here at -3dB) as a benchmark.
