Abstract :
Finite element analysis (FEA) has established itself as an invaluable tool in the design and analysis of many forms of electromagnetic device. Whereas FEA is very widely used in rotating electrical machines, in the case of linear motors and actuators, the need for such detailed and general purpose electromagnetic tools is arguably even more important due a number of factors. This paper illustrates, by means of three case studies, the merits of the various approaches in the design and analysis of complex transient and reciprocating actuation systems
