Abstract :
This paper investigates the performance effects of packet depletion on multihop wireless networks. The resulting capacity usage inefficiencies of link assigned schedules are shown even at the maximum supportable uniform network load. Hybrid node-link assignment is employed to extend transmission rights, allowing nodes to transmit on sets of reserve links when the primary scheduled link experiences packet depletion. Improvements in network performance with the extension of transmission rights are shown for proportionally fair cross-layer optimized link assigned schedules. The achievable capacity of spatial reuse networks affected by packet depletion is defined in a new rate region and a computationally feasible suboptimum is proposed. Cross-layer optimization in this rate region demonstrates further improvements in network throughput and fairness. The hybrid assignment facilitates network coding and the increased benefits thereof are shown for schedules optimized in the proposed rate region.
