Abstract :
Fiber to the premises deployments are growing significantly and the methodology for deployment is maturing around common denominations of ribbon of 4, 8, and 12 fibers. A new type of ribbon allowing breakouts in these denominations has been developed. The design of the new ribbon allows removal of subunit ribbons with out the risk of damage to the individual fibers. The host or subunit ribbons are then mass fusion spliced to a ribbon assembly with preconnectorized fibers in an enclosure. Drop cables are then connected and run to the premises. The demands of the route, span, and space inside each enclosure have driven the development of a new design of bend insensitive fiber for use in these cables. The combination of segmented ribbon in the distribution and feeder cables and bend insensitive fiber in the drop cable make for a more flexible and robust deployment.
