Abstract :
This paper presents a technique for contingency analysis in power systems equipped with thyristor controlled series compensators (TCSCs) and thyristor controlled phase shifters (TCPS). Contingency analysis is decomposed into three levels. In the first one,a performance index is assigned to each contingency case. The second level concerns with determining the correctability of overloaded lines. The problem of determining the optimum adjustment of TCSCs and TCPS required to minimize the real power flow violations is formulated as a linear programming problem. In the third level top worst contingency cases according to their performance indices plus noncorrectable ones are analyzed. Optimum generation shifts and/or load shedding to alleviate overloading arc determined. Results of application of the proposed technique to a 20-node network are presented
