Abstract
This paper analyzes the capability of cellular digital packet data (CDPD) to provide wide-area IVHS services in a typical metropolitan area. Delay-throughput performance results are obtained from MOSS (the mobile systems simulator, a GTE Laboratories simulation tool) for a representative city-wide cellular deployment. Both the normal peak-period traffic and the case of a major highway incident creating abnormally high localized IVHS data loads are considered. The results obtained for a minimal CDPD deployment (one channel per sector) demonstrate that CDPD is capable of meeting the wide-area IVHS services demand projected for the 20 year time frame
