Abstract :
The development of optical and electrical predischarge phenomena in oil gaps with a barrier has been investigated. The barrier effect is observed only under discharge inception in the first oil duct, responsible for the discharge channel-barrier contact. A higher barrier breakdown voltage (than that of oil) is the main cause of the inception of the barrier effect. Inception of a leader channel with specific characteristics is the condition for breakdown of the gap having a barrier. Disappearance of the barrier effect under sharp nonuniform field-quasi-nonuniform field transfer is connected with changes in the state of matter in the discharge channel
