Abstract :
This paper describes a combined problem of server instantiation allocation and transaction flow control in a multiprocessing-based client/server environment. The goal of this problem is to determine the optimal parameter values to maximize power subject to a multiprocessor utilization constraint for a given hardware configuration. Power is defined as throughput over delay. The tunable parameters are the number of server instantiations for each type and the number of transactions in the system. Under the heavy traffic assumption, a closed queueing network is built to obtain the performance measures through simulation. A static algorithm is presented to find the optimal point for the given number of processors
