Abstract :
Electron emission from a silicone-oil surface induced by double-photon absorption and subsequent electron multiplication in the gas space above the liquid was studied experimentally as a function of gas pressure and composition. The results are interpreted under the assumption of electron collisional ionization occurring in the intense laser light field. If the laser pulse is long enough in duration, and if the electric field associated with the laser light is strong enough, the emitted electrons will start an avalanche in close proximity to the surface
