Abstract :
Fiber-optic passive double star (PDS) network is described as a flexible and cost effective access network for microcellular radio systems. A unit cell structure is introduced which enables the PDS network to be effectively incorporated into the access portion of microcellular radio systems. The reduced total fiber length in the unit cell structure based on the PDS network is discussed in comparison with the conventional architecture. A system configuration which forms a cascade TDMA access over the PDS network and the wireless link is described, with this configuration, resource sharing and handover between microcells in a unit cell are centrally controlled by using the dynamic channel allocation. Substantial performance improvement for loaded traffic of the base station can be attained by resource sharing
