Abstract :
The particular flow organization induced by injection from a needle of small radius of curvature into an insulating dielectric liquid is examined. Experimental results are presented on the electrical current as a function of the point-plane distance and the applied voltage. Schlieren visualization yields a preliminary estimate of the width of the plume and reveals its unsteady character. An approximate analysis is developed which takes into account the finite but very thin axial region where charge is confined
