Abstract
In order to improve the rendering speed of large-scale terrain scene, a new real-time terrain rendering algorithm is proposed based on VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) technology platform. In this algorithm we transform DEM data into VRML format firstly, and with elevation grid node we can built terrain gird model and surface model easily. Then the visualization operation is carried out including texture mapping and lighting calculation. To improve terrain scene rendering speed, the optimization techniques, such as terrain data blocking and LOD (level of detail) are adopted. Results of simulation experiments demonstrate this algorithm can carry out large-scale terrain scene modeling effectively. Moreover, it is easy to achieve web publishing and data sharing for its VRML technology platform.
