Abstract
The challenges encountered in designing a user-friendly VAX-resident Datatrieve/FMS (forms management systems) archive are examined to illustrate the features that must be included when designing an archive for nontechnical users. In adapting prepackaged software to a specific application-even powerful and accommodating software-compromises will necessarily have to be made. If the designer is planning to pass the archive into other hands, those compromises must be tracked, and strategies for coping with them must be included in the documentation for the archive
