Abstract
On the basis of evaluating and analyzing the current applied image compression techniques in China such as the discrete cosine transformation, fractal compression and wavelet transformation etc. to counter their shortcomings, the paper puts forward a new algorithm (number theory transformation, taking number theory as its theoretical foundation). It does not need to store the fundamental functions and its algorithm can be realized by using shift operation without rounding errors. Therefore it can be forecasted that the number theory transformation will have a bigger compression ratio and a higher decompression precision and will increase the velocity of the decompression and compression. This algorithm is well worth developing and researching as an image compression technique.
