Abstract :
The paper first gives a brief overview of scientific experiments on LAN interconnection by satellite, which have been performed in the last couple of years in Europe, Japan, and in North America. Next, the key achievements of the nine most important research projects are summarized and compared. Finally, the technical challenges to be overcome to improve cost and performance factors of LAN interconnection by satellite are identified, as well as the major topics of future research
