Title :
Active multimodal presentations (AMPs), instructional designs and learner autonomy

Abstract :
Active multimodal presentations (AMPs) require judgements on which materials are placed in the various modalities, and how these are to be coordinated within a presentation which is effective both in its communicative intentions and as a support for learning. Gestures can be useful coordinators and they assume a variety of role in AMPs. These roles and the nature of gestures in relation to context and multimodal design decisions are discussed, together with the ways in which AMPs can be integrated within a communicative pedagogy. This aspect requires a closer examination of autonomous learning.
