Abstract :
Multimode airborne radars have been in development for 40 years, providing detection and tracking of both fixed and moving targets. Electronic scanned arrays provide the ability to rapidly switch modes, and survey widely separated areas. However, the demands on high bandwidth and long dwells to separate fixed targets from background clutter counter the high area coverage rate for moving targets. This survey paper will provide the basics on SAR and GMTI surveillance, and tradeoff on radar architecture and algorithms to obtain simultaneous, multimode operation.
