Abstract :
This paper focuses on using source rate adaption (SRA) as a viable flow control scheme. We developed a unified performance parameter, P a function of instantaneous cell loss, buffer occupancy, utilization, and user requirements. The parameter is derived from optimal control theory and is considered useful in quantifying congestion. A SRA strategy for voice services was developed using this parameter. Computer simulations were performed to evaluate the control strategy. It is shown that controlling input rate using SRA based on this parameter is helpful in significantly alleviating congestion and improving the performance
