  • Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. An AC plasma display panel (AC-PDP) has been the most promising next generation flat panel display (FPD) device and has been regarded as a good candidate for the large-sized, wall hanging multimedia display. However, the demerit of AC-PDP is low luminance and luminous efficiency. The improvement of the luminance and the luminous efficiency is the one of the most important, parts in the AC-PDP. Especially, the Penning effect has influenced the improvement of the luminance and the luminous efficiency. It is dependent on the species and the partial pressure of the Penning gases. We investigated the Penning effect in mixture gas, He(70%)-Ne(27%)-Xe(3%)-Kr(0.005%)Ar(0.005-0 1%) to improve the luminance and the luminous efficiency in AC-PDP. When a small amount of Kr(0.005%) and Ar(0.005-0 1%) were added to He-Ne-Xe, the luminance increases to 8%, the wall charge increases to 18%, and the luminous efficiency increases for 12% at 400 Torr.
