Abstract
Call set-up delay is one of the important factors to assess the quality of service in communication networks. Due to the power limitation problem in satellite personal communication networks (S-PCN), channel fading effects will cause signalling errors. Hence ARQ techniques are required. In this paper we examine the data link layer protocol used on the dedicated control channels (DCCH) in GSM systems. Two alternatives, modified go-back-N (GBN) and selective re-transmission (SRT) ARQ protocols, are proposed for the DCCH at the satellite air-interface. The optimum window size is investigated through the trade-off between the call set-up delay and the signalling capacity requirement
