Abstract :
It is easy to undermine the effectiveness of technical documentation or training by broadcasting a culture-centric or country-centric focus. This happens where technical communicators are unaware of the way they can impair their messages. A technical communicator in a broad-based national or international arena, whose target audience includes multiple cultures and nationalities, needs to be attuned to the ways in which language and concepts can exclude and alienate their audiences, rendering the message ineffective, or even harmful to the success of their business goals. They need to be aware of key issues related to localizing and globalizing their content; know what questions to ask concerning translation and special-needs learners; use key concepts for writing English clearly for audiences for whom English is a foreign language; be attuned to differences in conventions of measure, counting and time; and recognize and avoid confusing frames of reference
