  • Abstract
The electric propulsion system is an important kind of marine power plant. With advantages of layout flexibility, low noise, energy saving, convenient operation, easy automation, etc. it is widely used for ship propulsion and tends to replace the direct propulsion. By describing the particularity, present state and perspectives of marine electric propulsion, this paper explains the prominent merits of the PM propulsion motor over a DC propulsion motor, and introduces the high-power multi-phase PM propulsion motor in brief. The introduction includes the feature of its mechanical-electrical integrated structure, the externally water-cooled stator, multi-phase stator winding, and PM multi-pole rotor
