Abstract :
In this paper a modularization approach is presented with an example of special purpose machinery and demonstrated by a multi spindle lath machine tool. Thereby a methodology for identification of mechatronic units based on a distinction between different machinery modules is given. The methodology is based on the typical tradeoff between engineering flexibility and standardized manufacturing. The use case supports the analysis on the competing requirements of flexibility in functionality for customized solutions and therefore optimized production processes. The developed methodology helps in decision making during the identification process of the mechatronic units.
