Abstract :
This paper examines different methods to damp subsynchronous resonance between Type-III wind turbines and weak grids with series compensation. The basis for the evaluation is the new analytical impedance models of the turbine generator and power converter, as well as the impedance-based stability theory. The focus will be active damping of SSR through control of the converters. Damping by inserting passive components will also be examined and be shown to be impractical. The proposed active damping methods use local measurements, require no additional hardware, and can be easy designed based on the impedance models. Real-time simulation is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method and their transient behavior under different operation conditions.
